Labor Service Application & Process
Labor Service jobs are filled though the Labor Service registration process. Applicants are placed on waiting lists and ranked in order of the registration date.
Class I – No experience necessary
Class II – One (1) year of experience in related work
Class III – Two (2) years of experience in related work
Please note: For Class II and Class III positions, applicants must have relevant experience within the ten (10) years immediately preceding the filing of the Labor Service application. In addition, a notarized letter from a former employer—verifying, in detail, the applicant’s job description and dates of employment—must be submitted in order to register for the position.
Applicants must be at least 16 years if age. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Once the City of Brockton receives your completed application, you will be issued a Labor Service number. When there is an opening in the City, you will receive a letter of consideration.
Applicants will remain on the Labor Service register for the job titles for which he or she is registered for a period of no more than five (5) years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the civil service law and rules.

Police Officer and Firefighter Positions:
If interested in becoming a City of Brockton Police Officer or Firefighter please visit the Massachusetts Human Resources Division, Civil Service Unit. For more information on Civil Service testing or to apply for a test, please go to https://www.mass.gov/orgs/civil-service.
Please note that most positions require that you establish residency within the City of Brockton no later than one (1) year after you are hired.
