Dear City of Brockton Resident,
We are writing to sincerely apologize for an administrative error on your recent special utility
bill regarding the refuse rate increase.
A bill was recently issued that included a $40 charge reflecting a change in the quarterly refuse
rate. We have since discovered that this increase was applied prematurely, as the new rate is not
effective until July 2, 2026. This oversight was the result of an administrative error in
recognizing the amendment’s effective date, and we were unaware of the issue until it was
recently brought to our attention. Residents do not need to take any action. You may ignore the bill or throw it away.
We sincerely apologize for the confusion and inconvenience caused by this improper billing.
Immediate Corrective Action by the City: Abatement and Credit
To correct this error, please note the following:
- Abatement (canceled): All utility bills that were issued for the $40 increase will be abated
immediately. - Credit for Paid Bills: Anyone that has already paid their balance or has mailed in their
payment will receive a $40 credit towards their first FY27 payment, which is scheduled to
be issued in August.
We are taking immediate steps to ensure the accuracy of all future utility statements and
appreciate your patience and understanding as we resolve this matter.
Respectfully,
Patrick Hill
DPW Commissioner
