FIRE APPARATUS REPAIRMAN

FIRE DEPARTMENT

 

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NTO LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:  Inspects, test, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains all types of fire department vehicles, equipment, and apparatus such as aerial ladder trucks, hose wagons, pumpers, rescue trucks, cars and other fire fighting equipment.  Overhauls engines, transmissions, differentials; repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems, fuel systems, front-ends, brakes.  Perform preventative maintenance and other related duties. 

Skillfully inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, maintains and tests all types of fire department vehicles and apparatus, including pumpers, aerial ladders and platforms, rescue trucks, specialty vehicles, department automobiles and all related firefighting equipment.

Inspects, troubleshoots and repairs; brake systems, steering systems, starting systems, charging systems, suspension systems, two way radio systems, gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, air systems, high and low voltage electrical systems, hydraulic systems, cooling systems, fire pumps, power take off units, aerial apparatus, fire department emergency lighting systems, truck and automobile tires and wheels, vehicles drivelines and other related repairs.

Performs engine overhauls, pump overhauls, transmission overhauls, removes and replaces tires, radiators, differentials and truck springs.  Performs, preventative maintenance, such as oil changes, lubrication, changing various filters, making adjustments as needed and making necessary repairs.

Inspects, troubleshoots and repairs department equipment which includes hose repair; hand tool repair (axes, pike poles and rakes, ladders, gas powered fans, saws, Hurts tools, portable and stationary generators, and lawn mowers.)  Electric hand tools (drills, saws, cutters and grinders.)  Fills and repairs high pressure compressed air and oxygen cylinders. Inspects; maintains and repairs Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

Performs metal fabrication including heating, bending, plasma cutting, saw cutting and welding.  Welding to include Arc welding, Mig welding, Tig welding and gas welding.  Operates various metal cutting saws, drills and grinders.

Maintains records of material and labor used on various pieces of equipment and operates standard office equipment. Ensures that appropriate work practices and operating procedures are followed to ensure compliance with applicable safety practices and standards.

Performs similar or related work as assigned by Working Foreman Fire Apparatus Repairman, Fire Chief or their designee or as situation dictates. 

Supervision:  Works under the general direction of the Working Foreman Fire Apparatus Repairman; follows department rules, regulations and policies to complete assignments.  Assignments are provided daily and work may be reviewed as completed.

            Work Environment: Most work performed in a shop environment, but work may be performed outside in high stress field conditions.  Work involves exposure to constant loud noise and potential exposure to equipment with moving mechanical parts and hydraulic systems; field work may be performed in adverse weather conditions with exposure to hazards associated with chemicals, and use of heavy equipment.  May respond to emergency situations to repair equipment.  Operates all types of fire fighting equipment for repair purposes; uses hand, power and pneumatic tools; operates standard office equipment.  Generally has contact with other Fire Department employees.  Errors could result in personal injury/death, injury/death to others, delay or loss of service and damage to equipment.

 

            Minimum Qualifications:  Education and Experience:  High School diploma required; additional technical training; three to five years of light and heavy truck and equipment maintenance and repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

            Additional Requirements:  Valid Massachusetts Commercial’s Driver’s License. Obtains and maintains certification as a Level I EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) for all department apparatus.  Level I EVT certifications include, ASE Exams; T-4 Heavy Duty Truck, Brakes; T-5 Heavy duty Truck Suspension and Steering; T-8 PMI (after January 1, 2011 you must take the new EVT F-! exam instead of the ASE exam);  and EVT Exams; F-1 Maintenance, Inspection, & Testing of Fire Apparatus- (available beginning October 02 2010); and F-2 Design & Performance of Fire Apparatus.

            Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:  Thorough knowledge of techniques and principles of equipment maintenance and repair; thorough knowledge of metal fabrication, multiple types of welding experience, and the ability to improvise.  Knowledge of equipment and truck systems; equipment troubleshooting; and knowledge of safety practices and procedures.  Ability to correctly operate all types of fire apparatus; ability to operate various size apparatus fire pumps and aerial fire apparatus which includes stabilizer and outrigger systems; ability to operate power tools, and hand tools.  Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems; ability to develop maintenance solutions; and; ability to read technical manuals and equipment specification, work orders and instructions.  Problem solving skills; skill in assessing mechanical problems and finding solutions. Ability to deal with fellow employees under stressful conditions.

            Essential Functions: Most work is performed in shop conditions, but work may be performed outside in field conditions; strenuous physical effort is often required when performing maintenance and repair duties.  The employee is frequently required to use hand to operate equipment, walk, stand, sit, speak, hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, climb.  Stamina is required to work in adverse weather conditions.  Required to lift or move items weighing up to sixty pounds.  Physical ability to use power and hand tools, drive motor vehicles, operate and drive various pieces of pieces of fire apparatus and fire equipment.   Vision requirement include ability to read routine documents and operate vehicles and equipment.

Salary $35,492-$51,387, position is 7 steps, each year on anniversary date of hire, advance a step until reach maximum step, position includes medical & other fringe benefits.  Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., required to respond to emergency situations.  Applicants subject to a background check and a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information).

MOTOR EQUIPMENT REPAIRMAN A

MAINTENANCE DIVISION - DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

 

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Perform skilled repair, maintenance, and inspection of motor equipment; diagnose failures in equipment; inspect gasoline and diesel internal combustion engine-powered vehicles and other engine powered equipment; troubleshoot problems to determine appropriate repairs; check brakes, suspension and steering components; change oil, check fluids, grease equipment; do tune-ups; performs major repairs such as rebuilding engines; converts trucks into sanders; installs dump bodies and new hydraulic pumps; repairs hydraulic systems; repair electrical systems, loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, sidewalk plows, air compressors, heavy and light trucks, automobiles and other equipment; repair plows and install new cutting edges on plows; respond to breakdowns and conduct field repairs; adjust breaks and clutches; adjust or replace carburetors; remove sanders from trucks; lift transmissions, truck tires, truck springs and other truck parts; do front-end work such as wheel alignment; repair and replace tires; remove and dissemble diesel and gasoline engines; replace faulty or work parts; grind valves; perform engine overhauls; perform auto body and related welding and metal working duties.

Perform preventative maintenance, such as lubrication and replacing oil filters; perform body repairs and pain trucks and equipment; install equipment and electronics such as two-way radios and strobe light kits; maintains records of labor and materials used on various pieces of equipment. Ensure that appropriate work practices and operating procedures are followed to ensure compliance with applicable safety practices and standards.  Performs similar or related work as assigned by supervisor, or as situation dictates.

            Work Environment: Most work performed in a shop environment, but work may be performed outside in field conditions; work involves exposure to constant loud noise and potential exposure to equipment with moving mechanical parts and hydraulic systems; field work may be performed in adverse weather conditions with exposure to hazards associated with chemicals, and use of heavy equipment.  Workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations which are expected, but cannot be specifically anticipated.  May respond to emergency situations to repair equipment.   Operates heavy equipment and trucks; uses hand, power and pneumatic tools; operates standard office equipment.  Generally has contact with other departments and City employees.  Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, delay or loss of service and damage to equipment.
