Community
Brockton started out originally as a small farming community and now has grown into
an industrial - residential city. The City is considered a medical center with two
hospitals located within the City itself and two large hospitals in an adjacent
community. Other health facilities in the City are the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Office,
Healthway Plan Office, clinical and professional offices and convalescent facilities.
The senior high school has many unique facilities available to its students which
include a planetarium, swimming pool, theatre, student-run restaurant, outdoor track,
tennis courts and 10,000 seat football stadium.
Brockton possesses a wide variety of cultural offerings for the public, including
the Brockton Historical Society, Brockton Symphony and Opera of New England of Greater
Brockton. The City takes pride in the Fuller Craft Museum, which has won several
architectural design awards. The Brockton Shoe Museum, constructed in 1981, serves
as a continuing reminder of Brockton's heritage.
The open space in Brockton consists of a large 756 acre recreational area known
as D.W. Field Park. The park includes six ponds, bike and foot paths, and a golf
course. In addition, Brockton has 464 acres of conservation land which are available
for passive recreational endeavors. Also, the City maintains approximately 45 parks,
playfields and playgrounds for active recreation.
